How to wear a shayla

Three easy ways to wear a shayla, from the classic Gulf wrap to a softer occasion look. All you need is a shayla, a cap and two pins.

Before you start

Put on a tie cap or hijab cap so the shayla has something to grip. Georgette is the easiest fabric to learn with because it does not slip.

Style 1: the classic wrap

Drape the shayla over your head with the right side much longer. Pin under the chin, bring the long side over the top of your head and let it fall over the opposite shoulder. Pin it at the shoulder.

Style 2: the loose drape

Place the shayla with both ends equal, pin under the chin and toss one end loosely over the opposite shoulder without wrapping. Effortless and cool for hot days.

Style 3: the occasion look

Use chiffon or shimmer over a matching cap. Wrap once, then pleat the front edge softly and pin at the side for a polished finish.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop my shayla slipping?

Wear a tie cap underneath and choose georgette, which grips well.

How many pins do I need?

Usually two: one under the chin and one at the shoulder.

Can I wear a shayla without pins?

Jersey wraps can stay without pins; most shaylas need at least one.

Which shayla is best for beginners?

A georgette shayla, because it is matte and does not slip.
