Shayla vs hijab scarf: what is the difference?

Same idea, different wrap. How a shayla and a hijab scarf sit, which fabrics suit each, and how to choose.

Shayla vs hijab scarf: what is the difference?

Shayla, hijab, head scarf: in the UAE you hear all three, and they overlap. Here is the simple difference, and how to choose the right one for your day.

What is a shayla?

A shayla (also spelled shaila or sheila, شيلة in Arabic) is the long rectangular scarf worn across the Gulf. It is placed over a cap, wrapped loosely around the head and pinned at the opposite shoulder, with the long side falling over the front of the abaya.

What is a hijab scarf?

A hijab scarf is wrapped closer to the head and neck. It is often worn in a stretchy fabric like jersey, so it stays in place with few or no pins. It is the practical choice for work, sport and busy days.

Which fabric for a shayla?

Georgette gives a matte, opaque shayla that holds its shape and does not slip, so it is the safest choice for every day. Chiffon is lighter, satin has a soft sheen, and organza shimmer is made for Eid and weddings.

Which fabric for a hijab scarf?

Jersey stretches and stays put without pins. Modal is soft and breathable for the heat. Georgette works too, especially with a tie cap underneath.

You do not have to choose. The same georgette can be a loose shayla on Friday and a neat wrap on Monday.

How to wear a shayla in one minute

  • Put on a tie cap so the shayla does not slide.
  • Place the shayla over your head with one side longer.
  • Wrap the long side around and pin it at the opposite shoulder.
  • Let the end fall over the front of your abaya.

Questions

Is it shayla, shaila or sheila?

All three spellings mean the same Gulf-style rectangular scarf. We write it Shayla.

Can I wear a shayla without a cap?

You can, but a tie cap keeps it in place all day and covers your hair under lighter fabrics.

Which is cooler in summer?

A modal or jersey hijab scarf breathes best in the heat. For a shayla, georgette is light and comfortable for most of the year.
