Thasneem Thaj (@that_hungrybelly) in lilac
In February 2026 Thasneem Thaj (@that_hungrybelly) wore a lilac Laura Veils hijab with a matching lilac outfit.

Thasneem Thaj (@that_hungrybelly) is best known for food. "Get in, let's go on a food adventure!" is the first line of her profile, and more than 600,000 people follow her around Dubai's restaurants and kitchens. On 9 February 2026 she took them somewhere else for a moment: into a lilac Laura Veils hijab.
How we know her
Thasneem is a mutual friend, and she wears our hijabs herself.
The stories
She shared two stories that day.
- The first: a mirror selfie, phone in hand, in a lilac embroidered outfit with the hijab in the same soft shade.
- The second: in the car, the hijab still in place, with a few words to her followers about it.
We added both to our Influencer Picks the same day.
The look, piece by piece
- The hijab: a soft lilac, wrapped around the face and draped loosely over one shoulder.
- The outfit: a lilac kurta with delicate silver embroidery around the neckline and down the front, in a fabric with a gentle sheen.
- The setting: a mirror against patterned grey wallpaper, which makes the lilac glow.
- The finish: a red phone case for a pop of contrast, and a relaxed, happy face.
One colour, head to toe
Matching your hijab to your outfit, tone on tone, is one of the simplest ways to look put together. It is also the easiest way to make an outfit look taller and longer, because nothing breaks the line from head to hem.
Lilac is a lovely colour for it: soft, a little playful, and easy to wear in the daytime. The silver embroidery on Thasneem's kurta adds just enough detail, so a single colour never looks flat.
How to do a tone-on-tone look
1. Choose the outfit first. A plain or lightly embroidered piece works best.
2. Match the hijab to the main colour, or go half a shade lighter. A slightly lighter hijab lifts the face.
3. Let texture do the work. Embroidery, a sheen or a crinkle adds interest without adding colours.
4. Use metal, not colour, for accessories. Silver or gold jewellery keeps the look clean.
5. Keep the make-up soft. One colour from head to toe looks best with a calm face.
If an exact match is hard to find, do not give up on the outfit. Our guide Don't Sacrifice the Dress shows the other ways to make a hijab and a dress belong together.
Why lilac and lavender work
- They brighten the face without being loud.
- They work in the day and at night. Lilac is soft at brunch and pretty at a wedding.
- They pair with silver, grey, white and navy, not just with more lilac.
- They photograph beautifully, especially against grey or white.
How to wear the soft wrap
1. Wear a thin cap in a matching or nude shade.
2. Place the hijab with one side longer, and pin under the chin.
3. Take the shorter side around the back of the head and pin above the ear.
4. Bring the longer side over one shoulder and let it fall loose down the back.
5. Smooth the front so the fabric frames the face neatly.
Know the fabric: Malaysian heavy chiffon (georgette)
Most of the UAE knows this fabric as Malaysian chiffon or Malaysian heavy chiffon. Because the surface has a soft grain, a lot of people also call it georgette. It is not the light, sheer chiffon used for occasion shaylas. It is heavier, and that weight is the whole point.
- Look: matte, with a soft grain. No shine in photos.
- Coverage: opaque, so you do not need an undercap for coverage.
- Hold: it grips the cap and does not slide back during the day.
- Size: 2 m long, enough to wrap, pin and still let it fall.
- Best for: every day, work, university, and as a shayla.
By November 2025 it came in more than 100 shades, and it is still our biggest colour range. You can compare them side by side in the Shade Studio.
Shades to try
For Thasneem's look, start with Lavender Mist, our softest lilac, and Violet for something deeper. Dusty Mauve is a warmer, pinker option. If you prefer a cooler, matte cotton, try Pastel Lavender modal cotton.

Looking after it
Hand wash in cool water, or use a gentle cycle inside a laundry bag. Do not wring it; press the water out with a towel and dry it in the shade, because strong sun fades dark colours over time. Iron on a low setting. The full routine is in our care guide.
Questions
Should my hijab be exactly the same colour as my outfit?
For a tone-on-tone look, aim for the same colour or half a shade lighter. A slightly lighter hijab brightens the face.
What colours go with a lilac hijab?
Lilac looks lovely with silver, grey, white, cream and navy, as well as with more lilac and purple.
Is lilac good for Eid and weddings?
Yes. A soft lilac with silver or gold embroidery is a favourite for occasions. See our Eid hijab ideas for more.
