Nas Backer (@thecuttingboard_by_nas): തട്ടത്തിൻ മറയത്ത്

Nas Backer (@thecuttingboard_by_nas) is known for food. Her page, The Cutting Board, is about recipes and cooking, and more than 600,000 people follow it. On 31 January 2026 she posted something different: a reel in her Moja hijab, with a three-word caption in Malayalam.

Who she is

Her profile line is "From the cutting board to your plate", with the flags of India and the UAE beside it. Most of her reels are about cooking, so when she steps away from the kitchen for one, people notice.

How we know her

We know Nas as a food creator who chose to wear Moja and mention us on her page.

The reel

Her caption:

"തട്ടത്തിൻ മറയത്ത് 😌"

She tagged Moja's own page, @mojabrand.official, and added #hijab #hijabi #ownlife. We shared the reel in our Influencer Picks the same day.

What the caption means

"Thattathin Marayathu" means "behind the veil". It is also the name of a much-loved 2012 Malayalam film about a young woman in a hijab and the boy who falls for her. For anyone who grew up in Kerala, those three words bring back a whole film: the songs, the colours, and the soft drape of a hijab framing a face.

Using it as a caption is playful and a little shy, and the 😌 says the rest. It turns a simple hijab reel into a moment every Malayali recognises.

The look, piece by piece

  • The hijab: black, held up and lowered over the head like a veil, then wrapped close around the face.
  • The outfit: black, with a white geometric embroidered border down the front.
  • The mood: shy, cinematic, a sideways glance. Exactly what the caption promises.

Why a black hijab never goes out of style

Black is the hijab almost every woman owns, and for good reason.

  • It goes with everything, from a black abaya to a printed dress.
  • It makes white and silver details stand out, like the embroidery on Nas's outfit.
  • It is the safest choice for occasions when you are not sure what to wear.
  • It hides a long day. Black still looks fresh in the evening.

If you are building your first set of hijabs, start with one black, one nude and one colour you love.

Moja, the brand we sell

Every hijab at Laura Veils is Moja. It is the only brand we sell. Our story explains why. Seeing a creator tag Moja directly is a lovely reminder of why we made that choice.

How to get the veil drape

1. Wear a black cap so the line at the forehead stays clean.
2. Hold the hijab open with both hands and lower it over your head from the front, like a veil.
3. Bring both sides under the chin and pin.
4. Wrap one side loosely around the back of the head and pin above the ear.
5. Let the rest fall long over the chest and shoulders.

A black Malaysian heavy chiffon is ideal for this, because it is opaque, matte and heavy enough to fall in soft, deep folds.

Know the fabric: Malaysian heavy chiffon (georgette)

Most of the UAE knows this fabric as Malaysian chiffon or Malaysian heavy chiffon. Because the surface has a soft grain, a lot of people also call it georgette. It is not the light, sheer chiffon used for occasion shaylas. It is heavier, and that weight is the whole point.

  • Look: matte, with a soft grain. No shine in photos.
  • Coverage: opaque, so you do not need an undercap for coverage.
  • Hold: it grips the cap and does not slide back during the day.
  • Size: 2 m long, enough to wrap, pin and still let it fall.
  • Best for: every day, work, university, and as a shayla.

By November 2025 it came in more than 100 shades, and it is still our biggest colour range. You can compare them side by side in the Shade Studio.

Shades to try

For Nas's look, start with Jet Black. If you want a softer dark, try Cacao or Chocolate, which read almost black indoors and warm brown in daylight. Add a black tie cap underneath.

Looking after it

Hand wash in cool water, or use a gentle cycle inside a laundry bag. Do not wring it; press the water out with a towel and dry it in the shade, because strong sun fades dark colours over time. Iron on a low setting. The full routine is in our care guide.
